MY LIFE'S WORK

MY LIFE'S WORK

Peter Sanson's life's work has been the practice and dissemination of Ashtanga Yoga.
Since meeting his Guru Shri K. Pattabhi Jois in 1989, he has traveled to Mysore, India every year to continue his studies.

Over a 21 year period of study, Peter lived in Mysore three to twelve months of each year, immersing himself in the rich tradition of this ancient practice. Guided by Guruji's masterful hand, Peter completed 4th series and started on 5th - he also received instruction from Guruji on the accompanying Pranayama for advanced asana practice. Over this period he undertook daily Sanskrit studies with senior teacher Professor Sri Narayanacharya.

Peter is one of only a few senior teachers worldwide who have been certified by Guruji to teach 4th series, and he has been awarded placement on Sharath Jois' honorary teacher list.

Every opportunity Peter has to teach the practice connects him to his beloved teacher, and his teacher before him. Read more about the lineage.

For over 20 years, Peter has been tirelessly committed to passing on the practice without a single deviation from the traditional teachings. Central to Peter's approach is that he views each student as unique and approaches the teaching of Ashtanga as a form of physical therapy. Peter strictly observes that students learn the traditional sequences of asana -  without skipping postures or modifications. Each posture has a specific gazing point and accompanying system of movement with breath. As Peter has been practicing Ashtanga yoga for 30 years, this is very natural for him - he instructs each student one-to-one with lightness and sensitivity. Students attending workshops and classes receive a lot of hands on help and guidance - and over a course of study will develop an Ashtanga Yoga practice of their own.

Peter resides in rural Hawke's Bay with his partner Amna and son John-Manomay.
He makes an annual trip to Mysore, to commemorate the life of Pattabhi Jois, practice in the shala and pay his respects to Sharathji & Saraswathiji.
